CityAccord to explore event hosting outlook in evolving landscape at SportAccord 2021

[Source: SportAccord] Following the CityAccord host welcome by Evgeny Kuivashev, Governor of the Russian Federation’s Sverdlovsk Oblast region, a presentation focusing on major events and sport tourism will provide delegates with an insight into the SportAccord 2021 host city’s capabilities and ambitions.

“Ekaterinburg and Sverdlovsk Oblast are justly considered not only the industrial and cultural but also the sports center of Russia, with the sports community’s interest in the region growing year by year.” Kuivashev said. “We hosted FIFA World Cup games, the World Boxing Championships, Grand Slam tournaments, the Ski Jumping World Cup, and other major competitions. I am convinced CityAccord will help us demonstrate all our sports and tourism potential and will be the ground for discussing new challenges the top-level contest organizers are going to face amidst the global transformations.”

The packed programme will also feature case studies and panel sessions that will shine a spotlight on topics such as relationships between International Sport Federations and host cities, mixed-gender sports and gender equality within events, grassroots sports development, and the influence of sports infrastructure on a country’s social and economic development.

Furthermore, a series of Toolbox Sessions will also deliver quick-fire presentations, with experts offering their insights into areas ranging from ‘smart’ sports infrastructure through to a data-driven approach to targeting new event audiences amongst others.

The opening remarks will be provided by members of the CityAccord Steering Committee, including World Union of Olympic Cities Secretary General Mélanie Duparc, Los Angeles Sports Council Senior Advisor David Simon, and Sports ETA (Sports Events and Tourism Association) President and CEO Al Kidd.

CityAccord will sit alongside SportAccord’s other conference streams – HealthAccord, the newly launched InvestAccord and ArtAccord, LawAccord, MediaAccord and the main SportAccord Summit programme – offering delegates clear signposts to specific areas of interest during a busy week of meetings and networking opportunities in Ekaterinburg.

The annual World Sport & Business Summit is a six-day event attended by leaders of the global sports community. As the only global sports industry event attended by all International Sport Federations and their stakeholders, SportAccord also brings together organising committees, hosting cities and regions, governments and administrations, rights-holders, agencies and athletes, as well as top-level experts and organisations from the sports media, technology, investment, medical and legal sectors.

Beautiful Queensland offers event perfection

Host City: How would you describe the main focus of Queensland’s event hosting strategy?

Leanne Coddington: As the Queensland Government’s lead tourism marketing, experience development and major events agency, Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) identifies, attracts, develops and promotes major events that drive visitors to Queensland, contribute to the Queensland economy, raise the profile of Queensland and generate community pride.

The It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar is the platform from which we market events and our goal is to continue to grow the value of the calendar in delivering real economic benefit for the state. In 2019, the calendar is expected to generate $800 million for the state’s economy – having more than doubled in value from $380 million in 2015.

Host City: How does TEQ plan to achieve these ambitious targets?

Leanne Coddington: While the ongoing acquisition of new high-value events will certainly help drive this growth, we also endeavour to continually optimise the outcomes of existing events on the calendar. Working strategically with event owners, rights holders and promoters, TEQ’s focus centres largely on growing the number of visitors from outside of Queensland to events on the calendar. Optimising the event’s own marketing plans and leveraging TEQ’s tourism marketing channels and assets are some methods we employ to do this.

Host City: What does the Queensland calendar of events typically look like?

Leanne Coddington: Queensland’s calendar of events features events of all genres from professional to mass participation sport, to arts and culture, music festivals and business events, across the length and breadth of Queensland, from the Gold Coast and Brisbane in the south east of the state to Townsville and Cairns in the north and the Outback in the west of the state.

The calendar reflects the diversity of Queensland as a tourism destination and is therefore a highly effective form of destination marketing in its own right. Whether it be Wagner’s Ring Cycle strengthening Brisbane’s reputation as a world class arts and cultural hub, the Quiksilver Pro showcasing the Gold Coast’s iconic surf breaks or the Airlie Beach Race Week showcasing the spectacular sailing in the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef, each event is a platform from which we can market our unique tourism experiences and also tells a story about the host destination.

Host City: How is the calendar promoted?

Leanne Coddington: Under the brand It’s Live! in Queensland we can augment the marketing efforts of our event partners, and raise the equity of Queensland as an event destination. Targeting key interstate markets including Sydney and Melbourne and international markets such as New Zealand, It’s Live! in Queensland is promoted across digital, print, television and at each TEQ-supported event.

Host City: Australia has long boasted a strong major event hosting reputation. How does Queensland compete against other Australian event destinations?

Leanne Coddington: Indeed, Australia has a great reputation when it comes to major events. We focus on leveraging our unique competitive advantages, centred around the diversity of event hosting destinations on offer in Queensland. The decentralised nature of Queensland means we have numerous destinations capable of hosting large international events – Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast in the south east and Townsville and Cairns in the north of the State have all for example held world championship sports events.

Another competitive advantage is that our natural environment, ideal climate and laidback lifestyle makes hosting outdoor events possible all year round. This factor has certainly helped us carve out a reputation as a world class destination for endurance sport events such as triathlon, marathon and cycling.

And lastly, we are home to iconic tourism destinations and experiences. People love travelling here for an event, particularly participation sporting events and they love bringing family, friends and supporters with them because they can extend their trip and enjoy a holiday pre or post event.

Host City: How important is the broad appeal of the host destination to the success of an event?

Leanne Coddington: Very important. Events must be considered as experiences and a range of ingredients contribute to the delivery of a compelling event experience. While the quality of the event content itself and its delivery is key, perhaps the most important factor in delivering the success of a major event is the appeal of the host destination and how it engages with the event audience to augment the experience.

TEQ works closely with regional tourism organisations and local councils to assist event owners better connect with and promote tourism experiences, dining, entertainment and transportation to optimise the event experience of visitors. We’re also known for our friendly locals and our laid-back, friendly lifestyle is something we portray strongly under our tourism brand “beautiful one day, perfect the next”. We know that if we can optimise the event experience in this way, event visitors are far more likely to leave as advocates and come back again for a future holiday.

Host City: What is most important, attracting visitors from other states and countries into Queensland, or local community benefits?

Leanne Coddington: While TEQ’s strategy recognises the importance of both as ingredients to a successful event which deliver strong returns on investment, ultimately the attraction of visitors from outside Queensland carries the most weight in our event investment metrics. This is because it most closely aligns with the remit of TEQ. However, unless the event has a tangible benefit on the local community, the community is probably going to be less likely to engage with the event in a positive way. An event that is not engaged with the local community is unlikely to deliver a great experience for visiting attendees, therefore community engagement is certainly a consideration.

Host City: What would you say has been the most important impact of hosting the 2018 Commonwealth Games for the Gold Coast and Queensland?

Leanne Coddington: The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games delivered many great outcomes for Queensland. For TEQ, the event provided a high-profile platform to showcase Queensland’s tourism experiences to a large international audience. It also showcased the Gold Coast and Queensland’s major event hosting capability and given its success, has provided us with a great reputation to leverage and secure more events into the future.

Host City: How did hosting SportAccord in 2019 help with your sports event strategy?

Leanne Coddington: SportAccord 2019 was a highly strategic event acquisition that was about continuing to build the legacy of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Hosting the key decision makers from International Federations, national sports organisations, the IOC, event promoters and the world’s sports industry media all in Queensland – many for the first time ever – provided the opportunity to showcase our competitive advantages and most importantly build long term relationships that will ultimately result in future high-value events secured for Queensland.

Host City: We are delighted to welcome Tourism and Events Queensland as a Gold Sponsor of Host City 2019. What are your expectations of Host City, the largest meeting of cities and sports, business and cultural events?

Leanne Coddington: We too are very excited to partner with Host City and look forward to reconnecting with old and establishing new relationships with a range of entities across the conference and exhibition. Host City will provide us a great opportunity to share experiences, thoughts and learnings with industry leaders from around the world, while also showcasing what makes Queensland a great destination for successful major events, whether sporting, cultural or business events.

IAEH, ESA and AGES join Host City 2019 as first Strategic Partners

The International Association of Event Hosts (IAEH), the Association of Global Event Suppliers (AGES) and the European Sponsorship Association (ESA) are the first Strategic Partners to support the development of Host City, the largest meeting of sports, business and cultural events.

Host City Expo & Conference is a “one-stop shop” for the owners, organisers, hosts and other stakeholders of sports, business and cultural events. Now in its 6th year, the 2019 event takes place in Glasgow on 26-27 November and highlights the need for the sector to Innovate, Reformulate & Co-create.

Through the Strategic Partnership programme, Host City and the supporting organisations have opportunities to:

  • co-produce the event agenda, with a combination of keynotes, panels, presentations, workshops and side meetings
  • increase opportunities to enlist new members
  • increase access to the event for all stakeholders in major events
  • consolidate the major event hosting community around this unique focal point

Rick Traer, IAEH Co-Director and CEO of the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance said: “The partnership with Host City provides a platform to deliver against a number of our strategic objectives, including the opportunity to share best practices, promote a standard set of event impact standards and to build a network of individuals and organizations involved in hosting major events around the world.”

Daniel Cordey, Chairman of AGES said: “The partnership with Host City is a win-win situation and offers benefits at different levels for us. Our members get additional opportunities to meet industry professionals and the Association is co-organising interesting thematic talks embedded in the Host City event programme.”

Andy Westlake, ESA Chairman said: “ESA is excited to be partnering with Host City in November, as we think it’s important to explore how we can continue to enhance the contribution of sponsorship for major event host cities and organising committees. Sponsorship of course helps to drive additional revenue and offset major event budgets, but it also significantly enhances the spectator’s experience, contributes powerfully to the event marketing agenda and will often leave a strong and long-lasting grass roots legacy afterwards. We’re looking forward to being part of the discussion”

Ben Avison, Editorial and Conference Director of Host City said: “The launch of the Strategic Partnership programme is an important development for the Host City community. We are delighted to have the world’s leading associations joining us to further consolidate this unique focal point of all the various stakeholders involved in staging the world’s greatest events. We are very grateful to IAEH, AGES and ESA for their support in developing Host City and look forward to welcoming their members to Host City 2019, the largest meeting of cities and sports, business and cultural events.”

Sports tourism grows in Canada

Source: Travel Survey of Residents of Canada (TSRC) and the International Travel Survey (ITS)

[Source: Canadian Sports Tourism Alliance] Figures released by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance demonstrate that the sport tourism industry continued to have a significant impact on the Canadian economy in 2017. According to custom data tabulations from the Travel Survey of Residents of Canada (TSRC) and the International Travel Survey (ITS), Canada saw a continued rise in the value of sport tourism, with a total expenditure of $6.8 billion, an increase of more than $33 million over 2016.

The most significant increases occurred in the spending of visitors from the USA and worldwide.

International sport tourism from both markets continued their steady increase with 2017 up 5 per cent over the previous year.

The volume of sport tourism visitors from the U.S. rose 3 per cent, while the volume of sport tourism visitors from overseas rose 2 per cent.

International visitors accounted for 35 per cent of the total value of sport tourism in Canada, up from 27 per cent in 2014.

“Canada continues to be a very attractive host country for many international events, which draws people coming to compete, support and spectate at those events,” said Rick Traer, CEO, Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance.

“We have a stellar reputation for our expertise in hosting both summer and winter sports, with excellent facilities, organizational abilities, welcoming volunteers, and strong hosting program financial support at the federal and provincial levels.”

There has also been a concerted effort to market Canada as a preferred host for international sport events, said Traer.

“Working with Destination Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee, CBC Sports and a number of destinations across Canada, we have successfully marketed Canada on the world stage, at major international conferences including SportAccord and others.

“In 2017, Canada hosted 41 international events that qualified for funding under the federal government’s hosting program, second only to the USA in terms of the number held in any one country. That was a major factor in the growth of the sport tourism industry.”

Traer was also pleased to see the industry continue to thrive without a major multi-sport event held in 2017. “We saw visitation increase significantly in 2015, when Canada hosted both the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 in six different cities and the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games in Toronto. Seeing the steady increase in the past two years, without a major sport event as a draw, demonstrates just how effective our destinations and sport rights holders have been in bidding for and hosting events.”

Domestically in the sport tourism market, the number of overnight visitors from within Canada was virtually unchanged as compared to 2016 whereas the number of same-day travellers registered a 9 per cent decline. While there was a 4 per cent increase in the overall value of the sport tourism market for domestic overnight travellers, there was a surprising 21 per cent decrease in the value of same-day travellers. However, as the overnight market is significantly larger than the same-day market, the overall value of domestic sport tourism decreased slightly by 2 per cent overall.

More than twenty cities gather in European Capital of Culture Aarhus, Denmark for #SAC2017 ‘City Day’

[SOURCE: SportAccord Convention] SportAccord Convention is delighted to share details of the City Forum which forms part of City Day on Tuesday 4 April, taking place at the Convention Center in Aarhus, Denmark, this year’s European Capital of Culture. This year’s SportAccord Convention will have well over twenty cities present, and the 2024 bid cities presenting their short introductions at the afternoon session of the ASOIF General Assembly.

The ever popular City Forum will focus on Legacy Planning and Successful Hosting Strategies. City Forum is intended for cities, International Federations, stakeholders, sponsors and service providers, who work together to host the best international sports events. Organisations who would like to take part in the City Forum and take advantage of City Day should register at www.sportaccordconvention.com before the delegate fee increases to CHF 3000 (plus VAT) on 15 March 2017.

Jacob Larssen, Director of the Danish Athletic Federation will hit the ground running and share his insights on ‘Mass participation events and how to prioritise a city’s legacy’. The session will determine the event outcomes for cities that are most important to their community, sporting partners and stakeholders, and look out the best ways to communicate what they want to accomplish to these audiences.

With cities under increasing pressure to deliver on their legacy agendas, the session, ‘Promises to Keep: The truth about Legacy Planning’, will examine what structures and safeguards can be put in place to keep the promises made during the bid city process.

Commenting on this year’s City Forum programme, Don Schumacher, Executive Director of the National Association of Sports Commissions said, “Since its inception City Forum has offered content prepared specially for host city organizations. With the balance of SportAccord Convention focused on broader industry issues, the chance for cities and other governmental units to focus on mutual problems and opportunities makes it a highlight for me.”

When it comes to hosting strategies, there are many dynamics for International Federations to consider when determining what to look for from a host city. The first Hosting Strategy session will discuss some of the key considerations for sports federations when they evaluate their requirements for a host city including technology, viewer and participant expectations, economics, the environment, and the sport themselves – which change regularly and sometimes dramatically.

The concluding session at this year’s City Forum: ‘Think creatively as an event host,’ will explore how a city can best play to its strengths when bidding for and hosting events that are becoming larger and more complex with every passing year.

Nis Hatt, Managing Director, SportAccord Convention said, “City Forum provides a unique opportunity to hear from industry leaders on a variety of cutting-edge topics, while interacting with city representatives from around the world. I consider it a must-attend event for any city engaged in bidding for or hosting a major sporting event.”

City Forum will be preceded by City-to-City. This event is for cities and regions only and will focus on two subjects which have gathered momentum in recent months: (1) How cities can engage with their populations regarding hosting events (2) Whether sport events really are a proper tool to help increase participation in a specific sport.

SportAccord Convention is a high profile gathering of key decision-makers focused on the business of sport and building on the opportunities this brings. The 6-day Convention includes the Plenary Conference, LawAccord, MediaAccord, the Exhibition, as well as the Opening Ceremony and Closing Event.

Glasgow, Gothenburg, Malaysia and Skåne join International Association of Event Hosts

Destination marketing organisations from Sweden, Scotland and Malaysia have joined International Association of Event Hosts (IAEH).

Malaysia Major Events and Event in Skåne joined in the first week of January 2017, with Göteborg & Co and Glasgow Life having joined in November 2016.

The organisation now has 23 members since its formal launch in April 2016.

Malaysia Major Events was established to identify, promote, facilitate as well as support viable international events to be staged in Malaysia, the organisation is a division of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau and it is based in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysia has a packed programme of sports, business and entertainment events. Events scheduled for the first three months of 2017 include the Viper Challenge Series, the Wonderful World of Disney on Ice (100 year celebration), Powerman Duathlon Asia Championships, WTA - Malaysia Open, Miri Country Music Fest and Bryan Adams Get Up Tour.

Skåne is the southernmost county in Sweden. Based in the city of Malmö, Event in Skåne works to make Skåne a leading venue for top Swedish and international events.

The New York Times ranked Skåne as one of the top ten places in the world to visit in 2016. The region regularly hosts world and European championships and several other major events.

Gothenburg is Sweden's second largest city, with 540,000 inhabitants, located on the west coast. Despite its small size, it hosts an impressive list of international events, a success it puts down to close collaboration within the city's event industry, infrastructure for hosting events and bold, creative and professional organisers.

Glasgow Life, represented by Ian Hooper, joined the Association during Host City 2016 in November. Glasgow Life’s vision is to inspire citizens and visitors to lead richer and more active lives through culture, sport and learning.

Glasgow’s track record in staging major events is enviable, from multi-sports events like the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2018 European Championships and individual sports events like such as 2015 World Gymnastics, to important major conferences such as Host City.

The IAEH is a worldwide organisation for representatives of international destinations to collaborate together to generate the best possible value from hosting major sporting and cultural events, and provide a voice for ‘not for profit’ hosts of events.

IAEH provides a platform for members to learn from the successes and challenges of major events, share knowledge and generate greater long term social and economic benefits from hosting events.

IAEH meets at the most important meetings of the major events sector including Host City and SportAccord Global Convention.

Host City, the largest meeting of cities and sports, business and cultural events, will take place again in Glasgow in November 2017.
