UK Sport backs GB to win at Rio with million-hour support

Paralympic wheelchair tennis medallist Jordanne Whiley MBE

The English Institute of Sport, funded by UK Sport, will have provided 950,000 hours of support to more than 1,100 athletes between the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

This amounts to more than 4,500 hours of support a week over the four year Olympic cycle, in a bid to help Team GB achieve success at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brazil.

The English Institute of Sport (EIS) is UK Sport’s science, medicine and technology arm, with 350 experts helping elite athletes improve performance in more than 30 Olympic and Paralympic sports.

UK Sport provided EIS with GB£59,775,973 of funding after London 2012, where the EIS had worked with 86 per cent of the GB athletes who had won a medal. UK Sport and the EIS have worked together to build a world-leading high performance system in a bid to deliver Team GB’s best ever away performance.

“With less than 100 days to go to the Olympics and 120 to go to the Paralympics, our National Lottery funded sports and athletes are in good shape,” said Liz Nicholl, CEO of UK Sport.

“I have every confidence that they, supported by the EIS, will inspire the nation with their performances in Rio this summer.

“The thousands of hours of world class scientific, medical and technological expertise provided by the EIS each week to our Olympic and Paralympic athletes is key to ensuring they are the best prepared British athletes ever.

“The EIS has been the ‘team behind the team’ since 2002, and our high performance system wouldn’t be where it is today without the impact of their talented team of experts.”

EIS services support both the physical and mental health and wellbeing of athletes and coaches with expertise provided across areas including biomechanics, performance analysis, performance lifestyle, performance pathways, performance nutrition, physiology, psychology, physiotherapy, medicine, research & innovation and strength and conditioning.

This support combines to help athletes and coaches across a number of areas including maximising competition performance, recovering from injury, identifying talent, enhancing physical and mental health and wellbeing and transitioning into new careers following retirement from elite sport.

“It is the vision of the EIS to be the world leading institute for sport and through the funding and support provided by UK Sport, our ambitious goal is within reach,” said Nigel Walker, National Director of the EIS.

“The high performance system we have in our country is the envy of many around the world and that is underpinned by our leading practitioners boasting over 1,100 years collective experience across 11 areas of expertise.

“We remain on track for huge success at Rio 2016 and thanks to ongoing support from UK Sport, the Government and National Lottery, planning for Tokyo 2020 is well advanced as we continue to showcase ‘What It Takes To Win’ on a global stage.”

Olympic diving medallist Tom Daley received support from the EIS Psychology team. “If you can handle the pressure cooker environment of an Olympic final psychologically, you have the power to go all the way and win!” he said. “The support I’ve received from the EIS in sports psychology has made me into the diver I am today.”

Paralympic wheelchair tennis medallist Jordanne Whiley MBE said: “The EIS leave no stone unturned when it comes to helping athletes prepare for competition. The support they provide both on and off the field of play helps increase confidence and allows me to perform at my very best.”

IF Forum 2019 provides launchpad for athlete-centred sports strategies

[Source: SportAccord] Best practice strategies discussed at the International Federation (IF) Forum 2019 can act as a launchpad for positioning athletes at the heart of sports development, according to SportAccord and GAISF President Raffaele Chiulli.

Speaking in Lausanne at the conclusion of the three-day gathering, which is organised by SportAccord for International Sport Federations and supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Dr. Chiulli said that the vital topics discussed at the IF Forum would help to strengthen links between sport’s decision-makers and athletes.

Under a theme of ‘Athlete-Centred Sport’, delegates heard from a variety of experts on topics such as safeguarding athletes, financial wellbeing, athlete welfare and mental health, protecting clean athletes and strengthening the voice of athletes.

“Working together with our athletes is clearly the most effective way for us to develop our sports all over the world,” Dr. Chiulli said. “This involves working side-by-side with the athletes, listening to them and ensuring that our actions are helpful to them. Whether it is looking at the events calendar, empowering our athlete commissions or improving facilities for our competitors, I believe there is something we can all do.”

The importance of athlete commissions within IFs was highlighted by an engaging discussion that featured the IOC’s Head of Athlete Relations and Engagement, Kaveh Mehrabi, who spoke about the governing body’s International Athletes’ Forum.

Danka Barteková, the IOC Athletes' Commission Vice-Chair, detailed how the commission supports building an effective network of athlete representation and constantly engages with athlete representatives to collect feedback and provide support. Sarah Lewis OBE, Secretary General of the FIS (International Ski Federation) also shared her perspective on the role of the FIS Athletes Commission, including the composition and election of its members.

Dr. Chiulli, reflecting on the IF Forum 2019, added: “I hope that our discussions will not end here. We will continue to work together for the good of sport worldwide, because we are the united voice of sports. The lessons here can be passed on to National Federations, to ensure alignment throughout sports. Good governance requires us to lead by example.”

A workshop on ‘Athlete Centred Governance’ was led by Jenny Wiedeke, Communications Director, FIS, with Engaging Coach and International Speaker Gabriela Mueller Mendoza hosting a workshop on ‘Tools and Strategies for Athlete Engagement’. Other speakers included Dr. Thomas Bach, President, IOC; Philippe Leuba, State Councillor, Department of Economy & Sport at the Canton of Vaud; Stephan Fox, President, AIMS (Alliance of Independent Recognised Members of Sport) and General Secretary, IMFA (International Federation of Muaythai Associations); Jeanette Kwakye, Olympian and Broadcaster; Virginie Faivre, President, Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Games and Lausanne 2020 Athletes’ Council, Christophe De Kepper, Director General, IOC; Sébastien Gillot, Director, European Regional Office and International Federation Relations, WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency); Prof. Fabio Pigozzi, President, FIMS (International Federation of Sports Medicine) and Member of the IOC Medical and Scientific Commission – Medical and Scientific Group; and Susan Greinig, Medical Programmes Senior Manager, Safety Officer, IOC.

SportAccord President highlights sport’s global impact at high-profile Russian summit

Raffaele Chiulli (R), the President of SportAccord and the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), underlined the importance of collaborating around “a bold vision” as he spoke alongside Vladimir Putin (L), President of the Russian Federation

[Source: SportAccord] Raffaele Chiulli, the President of SportAccord and the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), underlined the importance of collaborating around “a bold vision” as he spoke alongside Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, at a high-profile forum yesterday.

Dr Chiulli was invited to participate as an expert speaker in a Plenary Session entitled ‘Development of Sport in Integration with the World Community’ at the Russia – Country of Sports International Sports Forum, which has brought more than 1,500 attendees to the city of Nizhny Novgorod.

In the Plenary Session, which was moderated by Pavel Kolobkov, Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation, Dr Chiulli and his fellow panellists discussed a range of vital issues, including how sport can be used as a unifying principle in the modern world, sport’s principles as the basis for harmonious human development, and the ‘Sport for All’ concept of promoting the role of a healthy lifestyle as a factor in the successful social and economic development of countries.

Dr Chiulli, who is also President of the International Powerboating Federation (UIM) and the Association of IOC Recognised International Sports Federations (ARISF), highlighted the importance of “opportunity, accessibility and sustainability” in helping to improve sports participation levels.

“For many members of GAISF, this means we must not be afraid to take sport out of the traditional stadiums and into the streets,” Dr Chiulli said. “Our role at GAISF is to be the United Voice of Sports. Together, we have 125 members, which is much more powerful than one International Sport Federation on its own. Together, we can share best practice and improve sport globally, and together we can solve and reverse the issue of declining participation.”

In underlining the need for a collaborative approach, Dr Chiulli added: “We are always stronger when we stand together and, ultimately, this is the only way we can all learn from each other. Of course, it is not enough simply to bring people together. We must develop tools for learning and sharing. We must have a programme of activities that makes us think and react. As with any change, it is important to bring together all the main actors around a bold vision.”

Alongside President Putin, Dr Chiulli shared the stage with Olga Golodets, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation; Ivo Ferriani, President, International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF); Julio Maglione, President of FINA (International Swimming Federation); René Fasel, President of IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation); and Aleksander Čeferin, President of UEFA (Union of European Football Associations).

After the Forum, President Chiulli was amongst an exclusive group of international sports executives invited to meet with the President of the Russian Federation to discuss about how to shape the future of sport.

Dr Chiulli will provide the Opening Address at SportAccord’s upcoming International Federation (IF) Forum 2019 from 28-30 October 2019 in Lausanne. The IF Forum 2019 Programme will focus on ‘Athlete Centred Sport’.

At Regional SportAccord Pan America 2019 from 10-12 December in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Dr Chiulli will once again set the scene with opening remarks before participating in a Panel Session entitled ‘The Future of International Sports Governance’ under the conference’s umbrella theme of ‘A United Approach to the International Sport Landscape in the Americas’.

The next edition of the annual SportAccord World Sport and Business Summit will take place from 19-24 April 2020 in Beijing, China.

International Federation (IF) Forum 2019 to Explore Athlete-Focused Strategies

[Source: SportAccord] ‘Athlete Centred Sport’ has been unveiled as the theme of the International Federation (IF) Forum 2019, giving custodians of sport the opportunity to explore the game-changing benefits of putting athletes at the heart of their strategies.

The IF Forum 2019 is organised by SportAccord for GAISF members and supported by the International Olympic Committee to tackle global matters related to the Sports Movement. The IF Forum will bring together more than 200 leaders from over 100 International Sports Federations from 28-30 October 2019 at the Hotel Royal Savoy in Lausanne.

The annual three-day gathering is also limited to a small number of industry partners and gives them exclusive access to an authoritative networking environment and recognition as a supporter of the Sports Movement.

Safeguarding athletes, protection of clean athletes, athlete welfare, future financial wellbeing and strengthening the voice of athletes will be among the topics under discussion during the IF Forum 2019 conference sessions, workshops, keynotes and fireside chats.

With attendance strictly limited to the International Sports Federations and the event’s Partners, delegates will discuss best practice in an intimate and inspirational environment, strengthening links within the global sports family as they gain a greater understanding of their role in supporting athletes and how they can benefit from ‘Athlete Centred Sport’.

Raffaele Chiulli, President, SportAccord and the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), said: “As we approach the 13th edition of the IF Forum, the event continues to grow in importance, having become a vital gathering for the family of International Sports Federations to learn and network in a relaxed setting that encourages a healthy exchange of ideas.

“A sport cannot flourish without its athletes performing to their potential, so it is fitting that the focus of the IF Forum 2019 will be on how to nurture and strengthen relationships between International Sports Federations and athletes, who are sport’s most important stakeholders.

“It is paramount for the future growth of International Sports Federations and sport that athletes’ voices are heard and the development, interests and lives of such individuals are supported outside as well as inside the competition arena.”

Kit McConnell, Sports Director at the International Olympic Committee said: “We have seen the Olympic Movement not only recognise the value of the athlete voice but increasingly bring athlete representation into the core of their decision making structures in order to shape the future of sport. This has mirrored the increased focus of all partners in supporting athletes on and off the field of play.

Putting athletes as a focus of this year’s IF Forum reinforces this focus and, in line with Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendations, ensures that we keep athletes at the heart of the Olympic Movement and build on other key steps such as the launch of the Athletes’ Rights and Responsibilities Declaration, the recent International Athletes’ Forum and the ongoing work of the IOC Athletes’ Commission.”

Presentation slots have been scheduled over the course of the programme as part of exclusive rights and benefits available to Partners of the invitation-only event.

The IF Forum 2019 will also feature numerous other opportunities for Partners to engage directly with sport’s decision-makers, including VIP functions and social activities for networking.

“Athletes can play enormous role in mental health” says 5 times Olympian

Natalie Cook, 5 times Olympian and Gold Medallist representing Australia in Beach Volleyball

[Source: SportAccord] SportAccord is delighted to confirm today, Natalie Cook, 5 times Olympian and Gold Medallist representing Australia in Beach Volleyball, will go under the microscope at HealthAccord (7 May 2019) and take part in this year’s Fireside Chat on Mental Health.

In implementing interventions to improve athlete health and performance, sport organisations often overlook the athlete’s mental health. Any coach and athlete will agree, that if the athlete is not well mentally, their performance outcomes will suffer.

Championing the cause for athlete mental health, Natalie Cook will discuss the importance of raising the visibility on a subject that touches the lives of so many, and share insights from her experiences.

“HealthAccord highlights the importance of mental health as a growing concern for our athletes during and post competitive years. It appears no one is immune and it is becoming more and more common to talk about it.

“In my early days as an athlete it was called mental toughness. Toughen up was the call! Now there are more and more calls to address mental health and support overall mental well-being.

“The athlete entourage can play an enormous role in this area but the athlete has to be willing to share, open up and be vulnerable. For an athlete to have a long career on and off the field, there are many factors at play. However, most of all, their sense of purpose, self-value/love and happiness are all so important.

“Let’s continue to shine the spotlight on the subject and hopefully it helps the athlete ecosystem find ways to make the mental health space a safe and happy space.”

To hear Natalie first-hand, organisations can register for SportAccord and attend all conference sessions, as well as the many networking opportunities offered within the Official Schedule during this World Sport & Business Summit.

Following her Fireside Chat, Natalie will join the mental health panel session and speak about the athlete’s perspective on the importance of a healthy ‘mental game’. Joining Natalie, panel experts will include Kathy Martin, Senior Director, Athlete Assistance, Women’s Tennis Association; Graziella Thake, CEO and Co-Founder, Optimisation Hub; Gearoid Towney, Founder & Director, Crossing the Line (CTL); and Dr Margo Mountjoy, FINA Sport Medicine (and HealthAccord Co-Chair).

The panel will examine innovations, diagnosis and treatment, the links between mental health and activity levels, and the effects on performance and quality of life. They will also share practical tools and takeaways to help international federations tackle issues and break down barriers to treatment.

HealthAccord sessions will also cover: short-mid-long-term monitoring of athlete injuries; supplements and their effect on elite and recreational athletes; and the pros and cons of wearable sensors for athletes, international federations and manufacturers.

Commenting on the strong and topical conference programme for this year’s HealthAccord, Co-Chair Prof. Fabio Pigozzi, President, FIMS (International Federation of Sports Medicine) and Member of the IOC Medical and Scientific Commission – Medical and Scientific Group said:

“Despite the well-known beneficial effects of exercise on mental illness, also athletes could be susceptible to mental health problems, during and post competitive years, although possibly at a lower prevalence than the general population.

“The good news is that mental illness could be more effectively treated if diagnosed early enough, and talking about it at every opportunity can make all the difference. There is a need, however, to develop athlete specific diagnostic tools and tailored treatments”.

SportAccord is the leading annual global gathering for sporting leaders involved in the business of sport and is set to take place from 5 – 10 May 2019 in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, a city brimming with opportunities and home to last year’s XXI Commonwealth Games.

In addition to HealthAccord a full conference programme will take place involving 50+ sessions across the following conference streams: SportAccord Summit, LawAccord, CityAccord and MediaAccord.
