Pierce O’Callaghan

Position: Director of Operations, London 2017 IAAF World Championships

Pierce O’Callaghan is a vastly experienced events professional who has operated at the top levels of elite international sports events for over 15 years.

A former International Athlete who competed at European and World level for his native Ireland, he started his professional career as Events Manager of Scottish Athletics in 2004.

Following a successful stint where he created a made-for-TV event called the Celtic Cup, he was appointed Head of Communications for European Athletics in 2006 and spent 4 years based in the Olympic Capital of Lausanne.

He then returned to Ireland and set up his own Consultancy called SAVVY Sports when he was appointed as a consultant by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) to study the feasibility of creating a European Games in 2010.

After advising the government of Azerbaijan on why they should host the European Games, he was appointed the Director of Sport in the organising committee overseeing the running of 20 sports and 6000 athletes for the Baku 2015 European Games.

He was subsequently appointed the Director of Operations for the IAAF World Championships in London 2017.

Currently employed as the Senior Consultant for the EOC, he is married with 4 children and based in Galway, Ireland.
