Mickel Beckers

Since January 1st, 2019, Mickel is director of Sports, Education & Culture for the City of Rotterdam. His department is responsible for the policies concerning education, culture, sports and recreation. The City of Rotterdam aims to raise the level of participation in sports and culture and raise the overall level of education and school results in all levels of education. The department does this by providing a broad spectrum of services and activities to all Rotterdam citizens. The department consists of roughly 200 civil servants who work closely with local organizations and institutions.

His department is part of a cluster of departments called Social Development. As member of the Social Development Board Mickel is, among other things, responsible for the city’s social real estate. From 2015 until 2019 Mickel was director of Youth and Education for the City of Rotterdam. His department was responsible for policies concerning youths, education, execution laws concerning compulsory education, supervision of day-care centres in the region and the so called ‘Youth Office’ of Rotterdam.

Before, Mickel was head of the Art and Culture department for the City of Rotterdam.
