Glasgow is a city bursting with life, energy, passion and personality.
Scotland’s largest city was named in the top 10 of the New York Times’ ‘52 Places to Go’ and voted ‘World’s Friendliest City’ in a poll by travel bible Rough Guides. With such prestigious accolades, it’s no wonder that the city attracts millions of tourists annually, many of whom are attracted to Glasgow for the diverse year-round events and conference calendar.
Glasgow is one of the world’s premier conference destinations, hosting more international delegates, than any other UK city, outside London. In 2020, the city’s Convention Bureau has been voted the Best UK Convention Bureau for a record-breaking 14th consecutive year. It is with these credentials that the city has confirmed significant major conference business until 2024 and is bidding for new business as far out as 2029.
In a year’s time the eyes of the world will be on Glasgow as the city prepares to host the United Nations’ climate change conference, COP26, postponed from November 2020, to November 2021.
Ambitions for COP26 remain unchanged - this will be the biggest event the UK has ever hosted and most significant COP since the Paris Agreement was negotiated in 2015. Glasgow will be ready to welcome delegates and world leaders from across the globe, extending our unrivalled warm welcome and showing that Glasgow is a city at the forefront of the transition to a zero-carbon world.
One of Glasgow’s greatest strengths is the uniquely personal approach that the city employs when working with conference and event organisers – reflecting the ethos of the city’s award-winning PEOPLE MAKE GLASGOW brand.
Glasgow Life is a charity which delivers cultural, sporting and learning activities on behalf of Glasgow City Council. In doing so we aim to make a positive impact on individuals, the communities in which they live and the city as a whole. In addition, we manage cultural icons such as Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and sports facilities such as the Emirates Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
Glasgow Sport operates one of the most extensive leisure operations in the UK with 32 leisure facilities and a significant outdoor leisure estate. Its dedicated Sports Development and Physical Activity Team promote sport from grassroots level through to elite athletes. Glasgow is in the world’s top five leading Sports Events host cities – and the number one for a city of its size – and was recently named the world’s leading festival and events destination.
The city has hosted the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, the 2017 TOTAL BWF Badminton World Championships, the inaugural Glasgow 2018 European Championships in partnership with Berlin, the 2019 LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships, and many other national, European and World Championship events.
Like other host cities across the world, the majority of Glasgow’s 2020 events were postponed due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. In 2021, Glasgow looks forward to welcoming the postponed UEFA EURO 2020 as the city seeks to rebuild and reinstate its major events portfolio, and returning to hosting events which inspire local and international audiences alike.
